The federal government told Stockton today it will receive nowhere near as much aid –– if anything –– than it had hoped to retain police officers who are otherwise to be laid off, officials said.

The announcement was devastating to City Hall, which had expected to be awarded at least $5.5 million to retain or hire back about 55 officers who are to be laid off next month. The federal government said in an e-mail today to the Police Department that if the city is awarded anything it will be no more than enough for 20 officers, or about $2 million, City Manager Gordon Palmer said.
