More from City Hall: Holman, Miller support budget, Martin opposes

8:15 p.m.:

Councilman Elbert Holman Jr. said to be prudent is to be able to make hard decisions. He said, “I understand where everybody’s coming from.” He said he sleeps with budget numbers “on the inside of my eyelids.” Holman said, “If we don’t get the money from the COPS grant, the cuts could be even deeper.”  He is addressing labor, saying it must work with HR to find a resolution.

Vice Mayor Kathy Miller said, “This has been really hard” for staff. She said, “I’d just like to personally thank the staff.” She said, “We don’t make these decisions lightly, believe me.”

Councilwoman Leslie Baranco Martin is thanking staff and the budget committee, too. She said, “I think it’s been a lesson learned for everyone,” particularly a lesson in communication. Martin said, “I’m really torn.” Martin said, “I want to thank the committee for being focused.” She said its attitude last week was “much more positive.” But of the budget, she said, “I’m not going to be able to support it.” She said, “Two weeks ago I truly believed that we were going to use a layered approach … in laying off police officers.” She said, “I cannot support laying off police officers at this time.”
