Miller on the budget rejection

Vice Mayor Kathy Miller said this afternoon that her decision to reject City Manager Gordon Palmer’s budget proposal was made in the last two weeks.

“I have some different issues, really, than Elbert and the rest of them,” Miller said. “Their issue is with the stimulus dollars … My concern is not just about the dollars. My concern is about the lack of a plan that justifies including those numbers.”

She said, “What I’ve been frustrated with is over and over our committee was saying the cuts at the top level are not deep enough. We’re not leading by example.” She said, “The budget committee’s input has consistently been ignored.”

Miller said she is “putting together some ideas” for staff to consider when revising its budget.

“I’m hoping to have it put together by the end of the week,” she said.

Miller said Palmer’s budget “just kicked the can further down the road again.” She said, “I don’t know that every avenue has been looked at in the most creative way.”

Regarding Palmer’s performance, she said, “I’m not prepared to comment on that right now. There’s a lot to think about here, and there’s a lot of stuff up in the air. I don’t want to inflame the situation any more than it is right now.”
