Rencher on race, Mark Lewis and that lien on her house

Public Librarian Natalie Rencher, who was laid off here this year, is a short-list candidate for director of the Birmingham Public Library and was in Birmingham last week for an interview, The Birmingham News reported Sunday.

Uncollected library fines, staff unrest and a grand jury investigation in Stockton came up. Rencher responded, according to The News:

“I was the first person of color to lead the library, so there was a little unrest there,” Rencher said. She also said the city manager who hired her had progressive ideas – as did she, which irked some staff members less open to change.

The News also reported Rencher and her husband had a $99,759 lien put on their San Diego house in 2006 for failure to pay federal taxes.
