How Oakland budgeted for COPS

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums was to release a budget plan today calling for laying off as many as 140 police officers, the Oakland Tribune reported, and the subject of the city’s $67 million federal COPS Hiring Recovery Program grant request came up. According to the Tribune:

“We’ve been admonished to deal with our budget deficit in a very straightforward way,” Dellums said recently, “to do it in a way that assumes that the COPS program doesn’t event exist.”

In Stockton, City Hall has a different take on that budgeting practice. The Department of Justice official this afternoon was not impressed.

A report is in the morning paper.
