‘Can I start you off with…?’

An industry group is asking restaurants to take “any and all steps possible” to reduce water usage — including serving water to customers only upon request.

In Stockton, that’s the law. And the restaurants I go to seem to abide by it. (Although I suspect the real reason they don’t automatically bring me water is because they want me to buy a peach iced tea or something.)

At any rate, the California Restaurant Association said it’s encouraging restaurants to train staff to be thrifty with water, and to use signs or social media to promote their efforts.

CRA said it has fielded dozens of calls in recent weeks from restaurant owners seeking suggestions.
