Our search for snow

Ann wanted to find some snow, no matter what effort that might entail, so we drove up Highway 4 on Saturday and climbed 8,800-foot Mount Reba. Here’s a report from the summit:

That’s Round Top Peak in the background, and a large chunk of the Mokelumne Wilderness. That area appears especially barren, but keep in mind, the view here is of the exposed south flanks of those peaks. There may well be a fair amount of snow on Round Top’s northern side.

All in all, a strange day. And not just because of the lack of snow. It was warm — 65 degrees in Arnold, and I’m guessing upper 40s or low 50s on the mountain.

I’ve seen more snow in July. And I’ve been colder in July.

Hopefully this whole area will be white in another 72 hours.

Looking south, toward the Emigrant Wilderness. Snow on the northern aspects.

Contrast that with this view of the Mokelumne Wilderness, looking north.

Maybe 8-10 inches of snow on one protected, north-facing ridge.

Thin, crusty snowfields across some open and exposed areas, but otherwise, mostly dirt.

And here's that dirt. This is the boundary of the Mokelumne Wilderness, looking north. Backpackers right now could easily access many of their favorite destinations.

Lunch on the top of Mount Reba at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. Who woulda thunk?
