Ever tried this?
I was up at Heritage Oak Winery east of Lodi this morning, for a story about this year’s “phenomenal” hummingbird population (see Thursday’s paper).
“Hey Alex,” winery owner Tom Hoffman said. “Try this.”
He took one of his seven hanging hummingbird feeders off its hook, and told me to hold it up in the air, offering the sweet nectar to any bird brave enough to come and get it.
I stood there like a minister before his congregation for a good 60 seconds, maybe longer, before one of Hoffman’s birds swooped down from an overhanging tree, startling me with his brazenness.
I’m not really a bird guy, but I have to say, this was kind of an intimate moment. He (she?) scoped me out with his big brown eyes for just a moment before alighting on the bottom of the feeder, inches from my finger, and poking that needle-like beak into one of the holes in the bottom.
He was gone in seconds, but not before I noticed how remarkably still his torso remained even as his wings beat furiously.
Got a feeder? Give it a try. You might make a new friend.
