Maximum pumping is once again allowed from the south Delta, thanks to a relatively low number of threatened Delta smelt being killed at the export pumps.
Smelt aren’t likely to be in that area after early April, so the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agreed that pumping could increase back to its highest level — a level not seen since mid-December.
Now the question becomes, will the exporters be able to make up for lost time?
San Luis Reservoir, where Delta water goes after it is pumped out of the estuary, was just 69 percent of average this morning.
