March Madness variation: A tad morbid?

NOAA Fisheries has set up an NCAA tournament-style bracket for endangered species, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act.

So who do you like in the first round? Can the Guadalupe fur seal pull off the upset over the blue whale? Does Kemp’s ridley turtle have any chance against the Hawaiian monk seal?

Pick your favorite species and the ones that get the most votes move on to the next round.

OK, it’s cute.

But at the risk of being a total killjoy, am I the only one a bit disturbed at the idea of a tournament in which 15 of the 16 endangered species are ultimately eliminated?

Let’s hope all of them fare better in the real world.
