Tuesday, Nov. 27: Class, “Winter Backpacking Basics.” 7 p.m., Stockton REI. Free. Learn what you’ll need to camp outdoors during the winter. More details here.

Wednesday, Nov. 28: Meeting on the proposed expansion of the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge. 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Hampton Inn Suites, 103 E. Louise Avenue in Lathrop. Learn more about plans to extend refuge into San Joaquin County for the first time by purchasing land from willing sellers and converting it to riparian habitat. More details here.

Thursday, Nov. 29: Documentary screening: “The Fight for Water: A Farm Worker Struggle.” 7 p.m., the State Theater, 1307 J St. In Modesto. $6. Film “describes how measures designed to protect the Delta smelt contributed to fields going thdry throughout portions of the West Side three years ago.” Tells the story of the state’s water struggles from a south San Joaquin Valley perspective. Saturday, Dec. 1: Heritage garden volunteer work day, Wildermuth House, near Lake Camanche. Help prune the plants and fertilize them using bat guano from the artificial Pardee bat cave. More details here (pg. 13).

Saturday, Dec. 1: “Tune In and Tune Up” event, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds, 1658 S. Airport Way in Stockton. San Joaquin Valley residents who have owned their cars for more than six months can get a free car emissions test and diagnostic inspection. The first 525 cars that do not pass the test and are believed to be repairable will receive a $500 voucher for repairs. Expect up to a two-hour wait. This is a test only; no smog certificates will be given. Sponsored by Valley Clean Air Now and the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District. More details here.

Tuesday, Dec. 11: Audubon Society meeting: “Bird Identification — Christmas Bird Count Refresher.” 7:30 p.m., Central United Methodist Church. Freshen up on your skills prior to the Christmas Bird Count. More details here.

Tuesday, Dec. 11: Class, “Introduction to Paramotor Sailing.” 7 p.m., Stockton REI. Learn about “powered paragliding,” the only motorized form of aviation that is not regulated by the FAA. More details here.

Wednesday, Dec. 12: “Muncies at the MuRF” (Material Recovery Facility, better known as a garbage transfer station), 11:30 a.m. at Waste Management, 1333 E. Turner Road in Lodi. This latest version of “Lunch at the Landfill” is hosted by Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce “Green Team San Joaquin.” Those who attend are asked to bring unwrapped toys for the Child Abuse Prevention Council.
