‘Mrs. Cricket’

Did you read the story last weekend about Patricia Keen’s cricket infestation?

Patricia feared hundreds of  insects would ruin a tea party she had planned Sunday for members of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

I followed up with Patricia today, and she had good news to share. The weather cooled down so much over the weekend that there were only a handful of crickets to deal with when her friends showed up in their fancy dresses and fine hats.

And anyhow, they didn’t seem too creeped out.

If anything they thought the whole affair was funny. They referred to Patricia as “Mrs. Cricket.”

“It turns out they had stories of their own,” Patricia said. “They were so funny. One lady told me that in Patterson, when she was growing up, they (crickets) were so numerous downtown that when people walked they crunched under their feet.”

The ladies also gave her complements — and not just about her flowers or tea sandwiches.

“They told me Beta Sigma Phi hadn’t had that much publicity in 20 years,” Patricia said.
