Against the flow on bottled water

No more bottled water at Stockton East Water District meetings.

That’s the suggestion of one board member, Loralee McGaughey, who heard recently about a city that has eliminated bottled water altogether at its various meetings and functions.

What better place to follow suit than Stockton East headquarters, adjacent to a drinking-water plant that purifies millions of gallons of Calaveras and Stanislaus river water every day?

“We’re responsible for keeping that water in good shape so that everybody can drink it,” McGaughey told me today. “Maybe we ought to be starting to drink it, too.”

General Manager Kevin Kauffman has agreed to provide a pitcher of water at future board meetings, according to Stockton East meeting minutes.

McGaughey sounds kind of pessimistic about the whole endeavor; her fellow board members like the convenient packaging of bottled water, she said.

“My idea went over like a lead balloon,” she said. “I don’t expect to see any great results, but who knows?”
