Let the mud fly
Off-highway vehicle lovers were one unhappy bunch Monday, which they expected to be their last day at the Carnegie OHV park – for a few months, at least — due to a lawsuit by environmentalists.
A few hours later, the off-roaders got a reprieve from an appeals court, and the park will remain open at least through Jan. 11.

Schwarzenegger: Resistance is “welcome”
UPDATE: The 60 Minutes show is drawing jeers from opposite camps in California’s water wars. Hey, at least they can agree on that.
Sean Hannity and U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes plan to break down the broadcast during Hannity’s show on Fox News tonight. Hannity’s blog says CBS was tardy in reporting the story. “What took them so [...]

Tomorrow is the end of the world
For almost a couple of weeks, that is.
Wednesday is the last day of business for the city of Stockton until after the New Year, and Delta College will be closed even longer — until Monday, Jan. 11. That’s to save some much-needed cash.
Here’s what you need to know about Delta’s situation for the next few weeks:

As soon as I filed Saturday’s story asking local experts about Copenhagen talks and the Climate-Gate e-mails, I knew I’d have some e-mail of my own to wade through this morning — from climate change skeptics who were displeased with the opinions of those experts, and with my presentation of those opinions.
Indeed, I got a few [...]

Workers at San Joaquin Delta College haven’t forgotten their colleagues who lost their jobs earlier this year due to budget cuts.
Dana Baker, head of the union for classified staff at the college, said a fundraising drive on campus collected about $3,200 that will be used to buy Safeway gift cards for 61 families who were affected [...]

Groundwater — visible from outer space
It’s fascinating — and not a little disconcerting — to hear that a NASA satellite was able to track changes in the San Joaquin Valley’s underground water supply.
Most folks on Earth’s surface have little idea of the massive amounts of water beneath their feet. Leave it to an unmanned machine up in the sky to break the [...]

Friday odds and ends
• Fresno television station KMPH hosted a live special on the Central Valley water crisis, including rare comments from federal judge Oliver Wanger. He’s the one who ordered the feds to rewrite the rules that dictate how much water can be pumped out of the Delta.
You can watch here.

Cold, colder, but not coldest
It may feel like an icebox out there, but no, Stockton hasn’t set any records.
Tuesday’s low temp dipped to 24 degrees at 6:34 a.m., short of the 22-degree record set in 1978. We were still 13 degrees below normal, though.
Looks like it was slightly warmer this morning, with the low temperature apparently 26 degrees. That, [...]
