Drenched
For those keeping score, Stockton was blessed with 0.02 inches of rain on Tuesday, according to the Natonal Weather Service.
That is a record for the date. The previous record rainfall: 0.
But don’t get too excited. With only 0.03 inches of rain so far this month, we’d need another day like Tuesday to break the record for the [...]

Anti-anti-bacterial
A recent study warning that anti-bacterial soap may be bad for the environment triggered a testy response this week from the Soap and Detergent Association.
The study by the Environmental Working Group and East Bay Municipal Utility District “grossly overstates” the risk, the association said in a statement Friday.
The soap folks are ”disappointed that (EBMUD) would support statements questioning the [...]

We wrote a story earlier this week about federal legislation that would allocate about $86 million to study a reported decline in the honeybee population, specifically Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).
The disorder has gotten lots of play as some kind of mysterious and inexplicable plague.
But this just in, from researchers at Oregon State University:
CORVALLIS, Ore. – [...]

Smeltdown, continued
In an effort to save more Delta smelt, the state says it’s no longer pumping water out of the Delta at night.
It’s unclear if this means less water will be pumped overall, or if the rate of pumping will simply increase during the day. Either way, the strategy is not likely to correct reverse flows in the [...]

new air chief
The governor appointed environmental lawyer Mary Nichols to the newly-vacated post of chair of the California Air Resources Board on Tuesday.
The appointment comes after the firing of board chair Robert Sawyer last week. Schwarzenegger had criticized the air board for approving a delay in San Joaquin Valley’s ozone cleanup, but Sawyer said his termination was [...]

Delta debate
The U.S. House of Representatives Resources Subcommittee is holding a hearing today in Vallejo on “the Bay-Delta crisis and the implications for California water management.”
Stockton-based Restore the Delta is there, and the group’s core message continues to be opposition to any kind of peripheral canal to send freshwater around the Delta rather than through it.
