Back in ’05: Stagg-Lincoln matchup a long time coming

Some of the Stagg and Lincoln High football players described their 7:30 p.m. Friday matchup as an underrated rivalry.

That’s a little peculiar, considering it’s been nine years since they last played.

The Delta Kings and Trojans played twice in the MaxPreps era, in 2004 and ’05.

Maybe, because of the incredible buzz surrounding Friday’s opening game, it’s generated what these new players feel is a rivalry atmosphere. I’ve certainly gotten that sense, and considering nearly 5,000 students combined go to those two schools, Spanos Stadium should be rocking tomorrow night.

For now, here’s a look at their last two matchups:

LINCOLN 48, STAGG 6 (Nov. 4, 2005)

Trojans quarterback Nicolas Ruhl threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns, and Curtis Shaw, who ended up at the University of Washington, rushed 20 times for 248 yards and three TDs. Overall, Lincoln outgained Stagg 576 to 149.

Delta Kings quarterback Zuri Nance threw for a five-yard TD to Benjamin Aramburo.

LINCOLN 39, STAGG 0 (Oct. 22, 2004)

Lincoln senior Billy Smith ran for 145 yards and three touchdowns, and the defense had four sacks and two interceptions. Ruhl hooked up with Pete Boggs for a four-yard TD pass.

*****

While this brief, long-ago picture paints Lincoln as dominating Stagg, this year’s matchup could be anyone’s guess.

The Trojans bring back more experience, but last year, the Delta Kings went 10-2 and earned the No. 2 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs. Lincoln snuck in at 4-7 overall (because of its 4-1 league record), but was rocked by No. 1 Folsom and record-setting quarterback Jake Browning.
