If you’re tired of the chatter about Stagg-Lincoln football, then I’m sure I’ve been annoying to you on this blog and on Twitter @RecordPreps this week.
The good news is, there are several other fantastic storylines for Week 0, and matchups that pit rivals, playoff teams and new adversaries against one another.
Here’s a brief look at some “non-Stagg-Lincoln” storylines for football’s opening week.
NO LEVI’S, NO PROBLEM
Manteca heads to Santa Clara-Wilcox this Friday, the matchup which was originally slated to open Levi’s Stadium’s “Friday Night Lights” showcase.
Even though this is not on an NFL field, if last year was any indication, this could be a doozy.
Wilcox edged Manteca 28-27 in overtime in Manteca. But after that, the Buffaloes won a Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship and appeared in the NorCal D-II bowl game. Friday is the debut of junior quarterback Dakarai Charles, and a new-look array of leaders for the Buffaloes.
A CLASH OF WINNERS
Sierra and Ripon High football don’t have much in common, except for being programs on the rise in each other’s back yards and in the D-IV playoff bracket last season.
The Timberwolves return wide reciever Hunter Johnson, named a Cal-Hi Sports first-team offense pick for its Preseason Sac-Joaquin Section team. The Indians hope to build upon a trip to the D-IV quarterfinals a year ago. The two square off in Ripon at 7 p.m. Friday.
GETTING ON THE WALL
Edison High quarterback Sean Buligon says his team has one goal in mind: to get their year up on the brick wall that looks over their field.
That wall has the years of their league championships, and the last was 1977. Edison hopes to shock the section and win the San Joaquin Athletic Association this year, and opens with a home game against Del Campo Friday at 7:15 p.m.
Look for senior tailback Ja’ Quan Williams to do some damage in this one.
