Brookside Christian hires Wilburn as girls basketball coach

If there’s one thing the new Brookside Christian girls basketball coach needed, it was championship pedigree.

The Knights announced they’d hired Pico Wilburn Tuesday, replacing Que Ngo and his four-year tenure. Ngo went 110-21, with three Sac-Joaquin Section championships and a NorCal crown.

Wilburn has four league championships, two Oakland Section titles, and oh yeah, back-to-back state championships. So he shouldn’t be intimidated.

He comes in from Oakland Tech, which competes in the North Coast Section come playoff time.

Brookside Christian principal Dennis Gibson told me they love Wilburn’s philosophy, which is to care for his players as individuals and support the total person, not just the basketball player.

Seriously, though, that brief but phenomenal resume helps, too.
