What a night

Jacki Gemelos was back to doing what she does best on Thursday.

The former St. Mary’s High star and the nation’s top recruit in 2006 finally took to the court in a game after a series of knee injuries had kept her on the sidelines. She entered the game for USC at Cal after only 26 seconds had elapsed when one of her teammates and best friends groaned on the floor in pain with an apparent sprained ankle.

Gemelos played amazingly well for someone nearly four years removed from her last game — and that was in her senior year of high school. Reporter Jason Anderson, photographer Craig Sanders and I felt fortunate to have the opportunity to witness Gemelos’ collegiate debut. She is someone we feel close to, having covered her amazing exploits over the years and in the process discovering that her character is equal to her talent.

She’s an inspiration and deserving of acclaim and our best wishes.
