A few weeks ago, I wrote on how I unsuccessfully tried to get a shot of some clouds at sunset in Bodega Bay. Also unsuccessfully, I had to race a high-flying jet plane that was leaving a distracting contrail through the scene I wanted to photograph. Though the vapor trail ruined the first scene, I actually used it as part of a composition in another photo a little while later.
I made my way up to the Bodega Head viewpoint as the sun dipped below the horizon. The warm colors of sunset faded as the blue hour took over. The jet flew out of eyeshot over the southern horizon but the white trail remained streaking across the sky and tapering off in the distance. With a little maneuvering I got in a position where the contrail pointed downward to a lone cypress tree growing on the bluff, making for a nice diagonal composition.
