The best offense is…

As long as the St. Mary’s girls basketball team has been a perennial powerhouse (11 section and seven state championships since 1999), a hallmark of their game has been their tenacious defense. This year’s team is no different. Not that they don’t have a strong offense; they do. There are several on the team who are playmakers and would be franchise players on any other team. But defense is what St. Mary’s does best.

It starts with an unrelenting full-court press. It’s so effective that many times opposing teams can’t even inbound the ball before the 5-second time limit. Steals are frequent, and if the ball does happen to make it down the court, the opposing team is so harangued and harassed that players are often forced to make bad shots.

On Saturday, St. Mary’s will play Archbishop Mitty for the 2012 CIF State Girls Division II basketball Norcal championship at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento. If St. Mary’s win there, the Rams Will go on for a shot at a CIF-record-tying fourth successive state championship. Although St. Mary’s will surely bring a powerful offensive game, the Rams know that the best offense is a good defense.
