In honor of Leap Day, Slate.com, in collaboration with the Magnum photo agency, has posted a gallery of pictures shot by famed photographer Philippe Halsman, who shot more than 100 cover portraits for Life Magazine. Halsman often asked his subjects to jump for a picture. His reasoning was that they would concentrate so much on jumping their guard would be let down and something of their real personality would shine through.
While I don’t have a lot of jump portraits, I do have many shots of people, athletes mostly, leaping in mid air. So in recognition of Leap Day, here are 10 lords of leaping.
