In vogue

Fads come and go. Some hang on and become trends. Some trends, in turn, can have staying power and infuse themselves into the fabric of our everyday culture. Only time and the whims of the populace will tell.

Angry Birds is a game played by millions of people on their smart phones or other Internet devices. Colorful cartoonish birds are fired via a virtual slingshot to take out their target of little green pigs.

Over the last couple of years there has been a fad of ski hats in the shape of animals. Mostly pandas, but I’ve seen them in the shape of bears, Elmo, even sock monkeys, worn by children and adults alike.

When you come across something that combines two fads, does it signal the elevation of each to something more permanent or does it mean they’ve reached their market saturation and the onset of their mutual demise?
