A non-sequential sequence

Coincidences happen. In sports alone I’ve shot opposing players with the same numbers, jersey numbers in sequence, even twin brothers tackling the same ball carrier at the same time.

I recently shot a women’s soccer game between University of the Pacific and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo at Pacific’s A.A. Stagg Memorial Stadium in Stockton, and indeed I did get a shot of two players with the same number. But that wasn’t the most unique coincidence of the game.

I got two shots of Pacific’s Alex Topp, and Cal Poly’s Leslie Barkmann leaping to head the ball. In each photo they are about a few feet apart with Topp in front of Barkmann. From the bleachers and tent in the background, though out of focus, you can see that they are about in the same part of the field. While they aren’t identical, at first blush they look like they could be back-to-back frames from the same motor-driven sequence just 1/9th of a second of a second difference. In actuality they were shot 5 minutes apart on two different plays.
