When I played the trumpet in grade school and high school, I was taught to keep cheeks from puffing out when I played. It was supposed to help keep the lip’s embouchure in the correct position. Famed Jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was known for having his cheeks balloon out when he played. He was a seminal figure in the creation of bebop and modern jazz. Though I kept my cheeks in check, my musical career didn’t amount to anything, but that was due to not practicing and my general lack of musical talent.

Last weekend I shot the California Community College Athletic Association Northern Super Regional baseball game between Delta College and Cosumnes River College at Delta’s Cecchetti Field in Stockton. Though not to the same extent as Gillespie, Delta pitcher Kyle Hassna’s cheeks puffed out as he exerted himself with every throw. It must have worked, Delta won 9- 3 and earned the team a trip to the state championship.
