The ol’ soft shoe

If you’ve been to the Stockton Police Station in downtown Stockton within the past few years you may have noticed a new bounce in your step. The sidewalk surrounding the block that makes up the PD is made of a soft spongy rubbery material (there’s also a smaller portion of Oak and Center streets made of the same substance). Curiosity getting the better of me, I sent a query in through Ask Stockton feature on the City of Stockton’s website. Within a few days I got a response from Sean Gallagher with Stockton Public Works department. He said that the sidewalks surrounding those areas were installed through a grant from the California Intergrated Waste Management Board. This grant reimbursed the city if it installed rubber sidewalks using recycled car tires in it. It’s much like the stuff used in many new playgrounds to keep kids from getting hurt when they fall.

So if you’re falling-down drunk, the best place to actually fall down is outside the police department. That is, of course, if you haven’t been arrested for being drunk in public first.
