Kreme of the crop

I love Krispy Kreme doughnuts, but they’re the kind of food that contains fat and carbs and are the enemy of most dieters (according Krispy Kreme’s nutritional information, an original glazed doughnut contains 217 calories, 22 grams of carbohydrates and13 grams of fat – of which 7 grams are saturated fat). Added to that, the doughnuts are smaller, lighter and airier than your standard fare (part of their appeal), which is problematic because one (meaning me) would tend to eat more of them before becoming filled up. The Stockton Krispy Kreme store had closed its doors in 2007 as a part of a corporate reorganization which as a disappointment to my taste buds (though not my waistline).

But on Nov. 16, Krispy Kreme came back to Stockton to the very same store that has remained shuttered since the store’s closure. I went to pick some of the melt-in-you-mouth confections the other day. As I drove up, I noticed a hand-painted sign in the shadow of the building. “Fresh Fruit” it read with an arrow pointing away from the store. About 25 yards away in the parking lot between Krispy Kreme and In-ā€˜Nā€™-Out Burger, was farmer Ruben Silva selling fresh fruit from the back of his pickup.

This time of year, I, like a lot of people, put on a few extra pounds. Starting from Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas (and this year, coupled with the reopening of Krispy Kreme), there’s plenty of incentive to eat and gain weight, and the colder weather makes us disinclined to exercise, so I went over and bought a bag of juicy oranges from Silva. But my will power crumbled and I bought a dozen Original Gazed doughnuts to go as well.
