My plan for this year’s St. Valentines Day was to grill some steaks for the family and have a quiet evening in. I had the idea to trim the meat into Valentines heart-shaped medallions. I bought some ribeye steaks and began carving. My knife skills are nowhere near those of the Top Chef competitors and the results were less than stellar.

I managed to cut out two vaguely shaped hearts out of one of the steaks. One looked a bit like an anatomical heart and the other looked like South America or perhaps Africa depending on which way it was flipped. Not the most appetitzing of shapes. I decided to abandon my quest and just to grill the steaks as they were. I cooked the cut pieces of meat along with the trimmed parts while the rest of the family had the unaltered steaks. They were appreciated the attempt though. After all on St. Valentines day it’s the thought that counts.
