Why we take pictures

(Camera: Nikon D300. Lens: Nikkor 17-55m @ 44mm. Exposure: 1/80 sec. @ f/2.8 w/flash. ISO: 100)

At the Help-Portrait event a young woman helped bring home to me why we were there. Selena Fields stepped up before my camera, quiet, shy, unassuming. She seemed like someone that you wouldn’t notice if you passed them on the street. I decided to use a ringlight flash, a piece of equipment used in many glamor and fashion photographs. It gives a fresh youthful look conveying a sense of hip vitality.

I asked her to give me a little smile and a brief, subtle twinkle came across her face and I knew that there was more to be had. I told her she had a great smile and the twinkle became an upturned grin. The more I praised her, the broader her smile became until it seemed that it became a bright beacon, more luminescent than any Christmas tree light.
