Sax and violins

“Seventy-six trombones caught the morning sun
With a hundred and ten cornets right behind
There were more than a thousand reeds
Springing up like weeds
There were horns of ev’ry shape and kind.”
Seventy-Six Trombones – Meredith Wilson (from The Music Man)

In all my years shooting prep football, I’ve shot many high school bands. I’ve seen the prerequisite trombones, trumpets and tubas. I’ve shot saxophones, clarinets and flutes. There have been snare drums, bass drums and tom-toms. Last Friday was the first time I’ve seen a violin in the marching band. In orchestras, for sure, but not during a football game. I don’t think it’s an instrument that John Philip Sousa had in mind when he wrote his marches.
