Advocates for shelter animals have become increasingly vocal about euthanasia rates at the Stockton Animal Shelter, and they’ve been getting involved in a county-driven exploration of forming some kind of county-wide animal control system with a new animal shelter.
So far, cities in the county are not lining up to be a part of the proposed arrangement. But there was hope that the county and Stockton could form a smaller partnership that could form the basis for a larger system.
Eileen McFall, a professor at University of the Pacific is one of the advocates, and she was at a “stakeholders meeting” held earlier this month. She sent a letter to the Board of Supervisors last week saying there was no outreach to other stakeholders who might have wanted to be there.
In the letter, she continues her advocacy for a “no-kill” model for any new shelter, but she was concerned the process was not moving far enough in that direction. But the meetings have spurred advocates to organize a “no-kill coalition” that could push for progress before any new shelter is built.
