Nancy Rubia’s cousin, Linda Norwood, called today to comment about the stories over the weekend on Alfredo Reyes Reyes’ arrest. The family hadn’t responded to my requests last week. Linda said this whole thing has stirred old emotions that they’d tried to put behind them. Linda decided to speak up for her slain cousin on behalf of the family.
Linda said the thing they want most now are answers. Nancy’s mother is still distraught over the death of her 13-year-old daughter back in 1982. Raquel, Nancy’s sister, too has trouble, Linda told me. Raquel was 12 then and with her sister, pleading with her not to get into the car. That has haunted her ever since. I can’t imagine. Detectives have said she will have to testify if Reyes’ goes to trial.
I listened to Linda and tried to take notes as fast as I could type. Here’s part of what she said:
We’re pulling out our hair. We don’t know this Reyes guy. We never heard of him. Where did he come to play a part in this? We just want to know why. What triggered these two grown men to do this to two little girls? So far we’ve got Espinoza’s story. Hopefully, when they get the other one down here … Which one did he do? Why did he do it? We just want to know. That’s what we want, so we can put it to rest.
