Public Defender’s Office in cross hairs

The Record’s county reporter, Zachary Johnson, broke a titillating bit of news on his blog Tuesday, coming out of a Board of Supervisors meeting. At the meeting’s end, he blogs, Supervisor Leroy Ornellas directed staff to study if it wouldn’t cost the county less to do away with the Public Defender’s Office and instead contract out criminal defense for the poor.

I jumped on it and called Peter Fox for his thought. That story is expected to run in the next few days. You might be surprised by his reaction.
