Judges on the move

San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Steve Scott will take the oath of office in his ceremonial swearing-in ceremony Thursday afternoon at the downtown Stockton courthouse. Word is it will be a full house. Schwarzenegger appointed him Dec. 6.

Superior Court Judge Brett Morgan, whom Schwarzenegger also appointed in December, is scheduled for his official swearing-in on Feb. 7. Since a hit-piece mulling his appointment ran, I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from people who have had a chance to meet him personally. In fact, he called me the morning the piece published to say he felt it was fair. He seems like a class act.

Judge William Murray remains a fixture here since his appointment to the 3rd DCA in late November. His assignment on the Superior Court ends¬† Jan. 31 – that’s this coming Monday. But I saw him this last Monday in Dept. 36 for a sentencing on a drug case. He’s also been at the last two Stockton City Council meetings, one for a swearing-in and last night presenting the design plans for the new Stockton courthouse.

Herbert Horstmann says he’ll retire at the end of March after seven years working for the Superior Court as a commissioner.¬† Anybody interested in replacing him – overseeing child support cases – has until Feb. 28 to apply. Horstmann says first off he plans to relax for a few days, and then who knows what?
