Around town on Election Night

While ballots were being rounded up and counted, I swung by the gathering for Measure A and B supporters at Valley Brew and the Registrar of Voters Office in downtown Stockton. Here’s what some of the supporters had to say, as well as Austin Erdman, the county registrar of voters:

Franklin making a comeback

The current Yellowjackets football team is all too aware of what transpired in 2007, when a recruiting scandal cost head coach Tom Verner his job and led to sanctions.

Under head coach Scott Behnam, now in his first full season, Franklin’s players and coaches are looking to chart a brighter future for themselves and those who follow in their footsteps.

Behnam and several of his players talked about this Wednesday afternoon during practice.

I’ve got a pug of my own, so what a fun discovery! Comment below if you think you’ve spotted them.

Raw court video

Alfredo Reyes Reyes appeared briefly in court today for a formal indictment in connection with the 31-year-old murder of two teenage Stockton girls. The former fugitive had been hiding out in Mexico.

As it turned out, the court waived a reading of the indictment, so the raw video is mostly procedural and doesn’t give much insight into the charges. Nonetheless, here it is:

Read my lips

Former United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was the keynote speaker at the Advancing Women's Leadership summit at the University of Pacific's Spanos Center in Stockton. CLIFFORD OTO/The Record

I was looking forward to shooting video of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s speech at University of the Pacific last week.

Then we got the warning: Shooting video would only be allowed for the first three minutes of the speech … and “absolutely no audio” would be permitted.

No audio? I guess we could always go with some creative dubbing à la Bad Lip Reading (just kidding).

We often are limited to a few minutes of photos or video (our photographer Clifford Oto blogged about this recently). But no sound? Bummer.

I suppose public figures nowadays have to be extra careful to avoid having a Romney-esque 47% moment caught on camera. Soundbites repeated over and over can greatly impact one’s public image. Or maybe it’s a speech that Rice wants to use and re-use, without “spoiling” any of it online. Who knows.

In any case, we ending up publishing a photo gallery instead of video.

Maybe next time.
