Test photos in downtown Stockton

Like Record photographer Clifford Oto, I was inspired by the clouds that marked the skies around San Joaquin County this week. Unlike Cliff, however, I lack skill with a camera. I’m still learning. After I left the gym Thursday and Friday morning I spent a few minutes taking test photos of the sky in downtown Stockton [...]

Tweets about S.J. County traffic conditions, outages

The roads are a mess this morning thanks to the wind and rain that continue to batter the area. Power outages also have been reported throughout San Joaquin County. I’ll be posting information about car crashes, traffic hazards and outages on Twitter.com/recordnet as they’re reported this morning by the California Highway Patrol. More information about power [...]

Story elements and more Halal photos and video

An ideal news article has three elements: Text, photos and multimedia features. Over the past few years I’ve been working to put together a toolkit that would allow me to produce each of those elements for Recordnet.com and The Record. The first item in the kit was a MacBook Pro for writing text while out of [...]

The Record’s front page, Jan. 1, 2000

With only about 12 hours left in the aughts, I thought it might be interesting to look at The Record’s front page from the decade’s first day – Jan. 1, 2000. The image below is a scan of a photocopy; click on it for a closer look. As an entertainment guy, I was keenly interested in [...]

Greetings from my hometown of Williamsville, N.Y., located in the Buffalo, N.Y., suburbs. I’m spending the holidays here with my family. Buffalo, like Stockton, has been unfairly given a bad rep. Yes, it snows here. But we’re not buried by blizzards nearly as often as our reputation would imply; right now we have about one-quarter of [...]

T is for Twitter, that’s good enough for me…

You no can see how many cookie crumbs stuck in me fur today!” “Cookie Monster: Cookie haiku: Cookie, cookie, cook. Cookie, cookie, cookie, cook. [...]

Praise for snail mail

I’m an email devotee who rarely uses the U.S. Postal Service. Still, there are some things you just can’t do online – like send an email to “Stockton Record, Stockton Calif., Ian Hill” and expect that I’d get the message. Apparently, though, that’s all the information the postal service needs, as shown by this envelope I [...]
