“Bowler Bob” talks about the Giants

I talked to a lot of Giants fans outside Stockton Memorial Civic Auditorium on Wednesday afternoon. They were lined up around the building, some of them waiting for hours, for an opportunity to see the trophy symbolizing the Giants’ first World Series victory as the San Francisco Giants. (Last time they’d done this, in 1954, their road jerseys still read “New York.”)

Among the fans was “Bowler Bob” (hey, that’s the name he gave me), who drove out from the Peninsula town of Brisbane for a chance at an up-close look and a photo op.

And he brought a rather hefty souvenir: a bowling ball. Not just any bowling ball, mind you — a Giants bowling ball, emblazoned with the words “World Series Champions” and the SF monogram. It’s not just a conversation piece. Bob uses his bowling ball to throw strikes.
