Google shows ‘every search is a quest’

“You like this sort of thing,” my friend wrote in an email.

Under it was a link to Google Search Stories, a fun and interactive way to make a short video based on a string of searches.

“Every search is a quest. Every quest is a story. These videos show anyone can do anything when paired with the power of search,” the About Me section of the YouTube channel says.

The channelĀ  gives a brief, animated preview of what the tool does.

The prompt lets viewers enter seven search terms and then toggle between how you want to search using Google. You can choose a broad web search or one with images, maps, news, blogs, products or books. The tool then aggregates a little movie for you, though it’s not always want you hope for.

Here’s my first try.

You’ll notice a couple things. A search for “stockton journalists” has no connection to Stockton, California. The initial search for “The Record” also brings up a newspaper of the same name in New Jersey as well. Then the application takes us to New Jersey before it finds Stockton, CA.

I tried a second time, making my search terms more specific in hopes I would come up with a different “story.”

Still, we were sent to New Jersey, despite coming up as the first listing in the search. I’m not gripping at the application. Good searches come from good search keywords. It does give me some insight into our search engine optimization and how people find us, though.

As for other uses, I’m not quite sure what I would do with Search Stories.
