Miserable title moves to … South Beach?

Maybe it was LeBron James’ fault. How else do you explain Miami claiming the 2012 “title” as the nation’s most miserable city from Stockton? Stockton, which ranked No. 1 last year and No. 2 in 2010, dropped all the way to No. 11 in this year’s rankings by the influential business magazine Forbes. It’s never […]

Congrats to Jennifer Torres

Jennifer Torres, until recently, was a reporter for The Record. Her stories on many of the people and communities in Stockton and the surrounding area resonated so well with our readers. Jennifer recently took a community outreach position with the University of the Pacific. She also is an aspiring author of children’s books and recently […]

Armageddon theme song?

“End of the World” by R.E.M. is getting a lot of play as the official theme song for the, well, end of the world that has been predicted for Saturday. But as a Steely Dan fan, I’d like to issue a write-in vote for “Last Mall” off one of The Dan’s recent albums. The lyrics […]

Spring fever! A few Ports tidbits

I took a look at the Stockton Ports 2011 schedule and a few things stood out: — Early in the season, Sunday home games will start at 2:09 p.m. A nice homage to our area code and Dallas Braden’s rallying cry. — The team still refers to the stadium as Banner Island Ballpark. The city […]

He was first elected to Congress in 2002. Cardoza’s oddly drawn district has a tentacle that comes up and grabs a portion of San Joaquin County and […]

This column pulls no punches

I’m originally from Michigan — the only one of our 50 states that lost population between the 2000 and 2010 Census counts. Detroit? The automotive home of America? It’s population is lower than any Census since 1910. The state of Michigan, like California, also is grappling over issues of pay, pension and other benefits for […]

Lovin’ Stockton: A preview

Many thanks to all of the Stocktonians who responded to my request to send in what they love about the city. Many of the submissions will be included in a full-page package on the Sunday (Aug. 22) Opinion Page. Unfortunately, we couldn’t fit everything on the page. Here’s a submission from Stocktonian Gene Beley about […]

Lightning strikes twice?

An amazing front-page photo from today’s Chicago Tribune, and the debate about how this photo was shot, is touched on in this blog entry.

Heads up, potential governors

Our loss is the Sacramento Bee’s gain. David Siders, who covers Stockton city government for The Record, has accepted a reporting job with The Bee. His last day here will be June 4. He’s moving to a high-profile beat that will suit him well. David will work in the Bee’s Capitol Bureau covering politics and […]
