When people ask if race is an overplayed or nonexistent issue, news like this happens: Basketball league for white Americans targets Augusta Jan. 19 Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle. The All-American Basketball Alliance announced the day before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday its plans to begin a 12-team inaugural season in June. Augusta has received its share of attention for the lack of diversity among members at Augusta National Golf Club, home of The Masters.
“Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league,” said in a statement. Augusta’s mayor and other city officials are not embracing the idea.
The most frightening statement in the story comes from the commissioner of the basketball league who said he expects to eventually find support in every town with a team.
