Jones locked in as board president, trustees split vote on vice president

The Lodi Unified Board of Trustees voted 7-0 to re-elect Richard Jones president for a second consecutive year. Jones said he accepted graciously.

This means the past five board presidents have been:

2010 – Jones

2009 – Jones

2008 – Ken Davis

2007 – Davis

2006 – Jones

In 2005, Richard Dean was board president.

For other positions on the board, Joe Nava was elected vice president on a split 4-3 vote. Calvin Young, the 2009 VP was also nominated for the post. Jones, Davis, Harvey Bills and Nava voted him in. Bonnie Cassel, Young and Jeff Thompson voted for Young.

It’s interesting that the board was split on this decision. The vice president’s role isn’t much different than any other on the board.

When asked, Jones said the only difference is that the vice president is usually in line to be elected president the next year – even though that has not always been the case in LUSD (case in point, the above list of board presidents dating back to 2005), he admitted.

Cassel was elected clerk with a 7-0 vote.

In other board organizational news, Trustees approved next year’s meeting calendar. All meetings will be held at the district office this year. Until now, the board has meet twice monthly, one meeting in Lodi, one at the north Stockton John Muir Elementary School.
