Trumpeter Mike Rocha, above, features prominently in my video of Monday’s jazz jam at the Blackwater Cafe in Stockton. He also was one of the night’s main attractions, as the jam served both as his birthday party and going-away party. Rocha is leaving Stockton to pursue his music education in southern California.

Here’s video of a Rocha solo from Monday. Post continues below video.

It wasn’t the first time I had seen Rocha perform. In 2007 he was among the jazz musicians who opened a 209Vibe-sponsored concert at the downtown Stockton art walk. The show’s headliners were two great hip-hop acts: Icarus Jones and Who Cares.

Rocha also played a big role in a video I shot in 2009 of the San Joaquin Delta College jazz band jamming. Look for his solo at the one minute mark below. You also might recognize the drummer in the Delta band as the drummer at Monday’s Blackwater show. Post continues after video.

Finally, and speaking of full videos of jazz jams, here’s a nearly 11-minute video of a jam from Monday night at the Blackwater. It features, among others, Jeff Teczon and Rick Russell on sax, Mike Klooster on keys and Giulio Cetto on bass.
