Concerts and nightlife around the 209, July 15

“It’s been a long time / I shouldn’t have left you…”

Actually, with a due respect to Rakim (and there is much respect due), it was good to leave you for a bit. I enjoyed checking in with the Midwest during my vacation last week.

But I’m also glad to be back, particularly this week, as there will be some great concerts and parties in the 209. The biggest events are set for Saturday, when the That’s a Hit producer showcase will go down at the Great Plate in Tracy and The Game will headline the Summerfest Block Party outside Copper Rhino in Modesto.

I’ll have more details later in the week. Here’s a look at what’s going on tomorrow night:

MC Battle at EnvyLocal lyricists will have the chance to demonstrate their skills and win $250 during the Hip-Hop Thursdays MC Battle at Envy/Vybe in Stockton. Several DJs – including No Shame and Black Olive – will be controlling the beats as emcees compete one-on-one in 90-second rounds in front of guest judges. Clee and Dece will host the event, which also is slated to feature live performances by E.L.S, Samraw and Ed King. Click the flier for more info.

College Night at Charlie'sThe hardest working man in local R&B is back at a new venue. L’Jay, who heads Clef Notes Entertainment, is hosting ladies’ and college night at Charlie’s, American and Market streets in downtown Stockton. L’Jay has helped keep Stockton’s R&B scene alive by holding shows over the past several years at the Brick House, Fat’s and other area venues. He’s also organized comedy performances and parties like Thursday’s ladies’ and college night, which features $1 beers and shots as well as sets by DJs Chip and Joe Slash. Click the flier for more information.

Other events Thursday:

Modesto: Flyboys House Party at Copper Rhino.

Stockton: I Love Summer party at Taste.

If you want your event featured in this blog in the future, you can send me a Facebook invite, post it as a comment on or Tweet your info with @209Vibe. You can also leave it as a comment on this blog post.

For more local entertainment news and information head to, and come back to the LENS blog tomorrow for info about events set to be held Friday.
