Concerts and nightlife around the 209, June 18

Looking for something to do tonight? Click here.

Planet Asia at 856There are two upcoming concerts worth noting before we get to Friday’s local entertainment lineup. On Wednesday, June 23, Fresno rapper Planet Asia will be at 856 in Stockton. The Bay Area emcee is a two-time winner of The Source’s Independent Album of the Year Award and he’s collaborated with the likes of Ghostface Killah and Talib Kweli. The 856 show is being promoted by Ben Kaos, who worked with fellow local rapper BROke and others to bring Casual and Canibus to Stockton for shows earlier this year.

Wednesday’s bill also includes BROke as well as Armstrong, Viduals and DJ No Shame. Click the flier for more info.

In other local show news, promoter Middagh Goodwin announced yesterday afternoon that several disbanded area hardcore and punk bands would be reuniting for a 209 Family Reunion show Sept. 11 at the Plea for Peace Center in Stockton.

Betty Rage in 2001The bill includes local fan favorites Thought Riot as well as Betty Rage (at right, in 2001), whose members later went on to form Prieta and The Outlaw Dance Society, among many other bands. Check the LENS blog and The Record later in the year for more on that show.

Now here’s what’s going on tomorrow.

Friday

The Fabulous Thunderbirds at Fat CatA big week for live music in the 209 starts Friday night with an incredible lineup of shows at Fat Cat. At 7 p.m. the Modesto club will host The Fabulous Thunderbirds, a Grammy-nominated power blues rock-act. While you probably know the band from its 1980s hit “Tuff Enough,” which has the world’s easiest singalong chorus (“Ain’t that tuff enough”), the Fabulous Thunderbirds also has some serious rock and blues chops. It’s opened for The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton.

Saucy Cocktail and Matty Comer and the Experience also are on the bill, among others; Click the flier at left for more info.

The Grouch at Fat CatThe Fabulous Thunderbirds show will be followed at Fat Cat at 9:30 p.m. (probably 9:30 p.m.-ish) with a performance by The Grouch, one of the West Coast’s best-known underground hip-hop acts. A founding member of Living Legends who was raised in Oakland, The Grouch has earned a devoted following through his head-nodding flow and commitment to live shows. Equipto and Bored Stiff round out the lineup; click the flier for more info.
