Today I’m introducing a new format for concerts and nightlife around the 209 that will hopefully help me do a better job of getting you the latest local event news. Instead of writing one long post weekly, I’m planning to give you shorter posts every day from Wednesday through Friday. Each post will highlight parties and concerts happening in the 209 the following day.
Then, on Mondays, I’ll post my interactive calendar of upcoming events so you can plan your party schedule for the coming weeks.
The new format will allow me to include events I hear about on Thursday afternoons or Fridays, which was after the deadline for previous concerts and nightlife posts. It also will make it easier to fit writing posts into my schedule. If you’re a regular reader you know I had to skip writing my weekly posts in late May to focus on my other responsibilities.
To start, here’s a look at what’s going on tonight and tomorrow around the 209:
Tonight:
Hot dang, 1986 and 1986 were great for hip-hop. Several classic albums were released during those years, including LL Cool J’s “Bigger and Deffer,” Public Enemy’s “Yo! Bum Rush the Show,” Eric B. and Rakim’s “Paid in Full,” the Beastie Boys’ “Licensed to Ill,” BDP’s “Criminal Minded” and Run-DMC’s “Raising Hell.” (Photo of Flavor Flav and Chuck D. from PE by Alterna2 via Wikipedia.)
Tonight, hip-hop’s ’80s roots can be heard in the 209, as Classic Hip-Hop Thursdays is held at Envy in Stockton. Click here for more about the club.
Blogger’s note: You might be wondering why I cited 1986-1987 in particular. The first draft of this post also included info about a Corey Feldman show at Fat Cat and made some highly insightful comparisons between hip-hop and Feldman’s career those years. Upon further review, however, I learned that the Feldman show has been canceled.
Other events tonight:
Modesto: Flyboys House Party at Copper Rhino.
Stockton: I Love Summer party at Taste; Snap Jackson and the Knock on Wood Players at Lozano’s.
Friday:
As of Thursday morning promoter Middagh Goodwin was still looking for a local band to complete the lineup for Friday’s Plea for Peace Center show that also includes The Atom Age and Danny Secretion. You can contact Goodwin here, here or here.
If you’re like me, your life has felt strangely empty since the NFL season ended and you haven’t had an excuse to get up early, drink and cheer like crazy.
Thank God the World Cup is here.
You don’t need to be a soccer fan to enjoy the tournament. Just head to a bar for any World Cup match over the next few weeks, and you’re likely to find cheap drinks, excited fans and a good time. Clayton’s in Modesto opens at 6 a.m. Friday for the Mexico vs. Africa game. Revolucion 1910 also will be open early Friday and is offering $2.50 Coronas and Budweiser for every match it shows. Click here for more about Clayton’s; you can check out the Revolucion 1910 flier here.
The Downtown Stockton Alliance kicks off its 2nd Fridays series this week with a great lineup of events that includes the weekly farmer’s market and this year’s first monthly downtown art walk. The farmer’s market runs from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. along El Dorado Street and in DeCarli Square, which also will host the Sing for Their Supper Karaoke fundraiser for the Gospel Center Rescue Mission.
Janet Leigh Plaza, meanwhile, will host a beer garden from 5-9 p.m. and a performance by local reggae artist Jonathan Michelsen at 7 p.m. The art walk will be held from 5-9 p.m. at venues along Weber Avenue and Sutter Street.
