Copper Rhino in Stockton, Brandon Tyler, Tracy cheerleading video and much more

In the news biz they call this a notebook dump; it’s several smaller items I’ve been planning to write about for awhile rolled into one post. I’m not a big fan of the term notebook dump, though. You can suggest a better title in a comment on this post.

• Copper Rhino, one of Modesto’s biggest clubs, is coming to downtown Stockton.  Or at least the people behind Copper Rhino are coming to downtown Stockton, according to the liquor permit application notice that’s been posted in the window of a building on California Street for the past few months. Sources have confirmed it’s the same Copper Rhino. That’s the building at left; click the image to see a photo of the notice. Stockton residents may best know it as the former home of Taste of Brittany, which is now located in the Miracle Mile.

According to the notice, the new establishment will be called O’Ryleigh’s. It will encompass a markedly different space compared to Copper Rhino, which includes a lounge and a warehouse-like dance club side-by-side. The Stockton building has more stories, but each floor is much smaller than the Modesto club.

The Stockton establishment will be just a few storefronts north of Taste, a new nightclub that’s been working to bring a Modesto-esque (yes, I said Modesto-esque) nightlife experience to the city. It regularly hosts events promoted by the Modesto-based Flyboys, which also works at Copper Rhino.

Most of the rest of the block is either vacant or undergoing renovation. It will be interesting to see if the area will develop into a hub of Stockton nightlife, considering it’s located several blocks from City Centre Cinemas 16 and the heart of the downtown entertainment district.

• Local singer-songwriter Brandon Tyler (at right) recently wrote a brief but interesting blog post explaining why he no longer sells his music on MySpace. (Read more about the MySpace/Imeem deal here.) It’s great to see that Brandon is keeping up with developments in the digital music business; more musicians should be following his example. Too few artists understand the basics of the music industry (like that a record deal is a loan, not free money), much less the new math of iTunes and Snocap. As a result they end up disappointed (like this guy – thanks to Christian Burkin for the link) or worse, deep in debt. BTW, Brandon has a pretty cool Web site that you can find here.

• Speaking of the industry, Lodi jazz guitarist Travis Vega (left) has started writing about his efforts to succeed in the music business in a new blog called “The Career Musician.” Travis’ talents have earned him recognition and radio airtime, the latter being a rare accomplishment for a local musician. It could make “The Career Musician” one of the area’s more interesting blogs.

• It’s holiday stroll season! In the past few weeks there have been several strolls of shops in Modesto and Stockton designed to encourage local residents to buy from local businesses and artists. For this blogger the area’s best stroll, by far, was Hand Born, held Nov. 28 in downtown Modesto. Shoppers packed five locations to check out and buy the wares of 40 local artisans and enjoy street-side performances by area musicians, including the aforementioned not an Airplane. It was great to see such an incredible turnout for an event that supported the local arts scene. Congrats to organizers Greg Edwards of Off the Air and Tawny Holt of Armour sans Anguish. I took several iPhone photos at Hand Born as well as at a recent stroll in Stockton’s Miracle Mile; at left, a Port City Mud artist works on a new creation during the Miracle Mile crawl; middle, a musician performs streetside at Hand Born. Right, the crowd at Queen Mab’s during Hand Born. (Post continues below photos.)

• 209Vibe.com is getting a long-overdue update. Read more about that here.

• There will be no Ice on the Delta this year; click here for more on that.

• The next Apollo Night talent show will be held in November 2010 instead of in February to accommodate work on the Stockton Memorial Civic Auditorium. David Siders has some interesting info about the civic as an entertainment venue here. (For those of you keeping track, that’s this post’s third link to a David Siders item. He now owes me an ice cream cone.) Apollo Night auditions start in late March; click the flier at right for a full schedule and more information.

• Finally, I’m going to move from music to myRecord and tip my hat to the Tracy High Cheer Competition Team, which recently took first place in the Super Varsity division at a USA Cheer Competition event. Here is video of their performance.
