One of the 209’s biggest events this week will certainly be Monday’s Against Me! show at the Plea for Peace Center in Stockton. (Photo at right from Wikipedia Commons). I’m adding the band to my list of musicians that I never thought I’d see perform in the Port City (also on the list: Common, Morrissey and Talib Kweli.) Unfortunately, it’s also going on my wish-I-could’a-been-there list, as I’ll be back east for the Holidays beginning Sunday. For those of you who will be in Stockton and are considering attending the show, you can find an interview with the band and a lot more info here.
If literate punk with acoustic roots isn’t your thing, don’t worry. You still have many entertainment options in the area.
The fun begins tonight with French Cassettes headlining a concert and art show at Copper Rhino in Modesto. The Ripon act is one of the area’s most intriguing and innovative bands, and you’ll always hear something new and unexpected at their shows. Dubious Ranger and Plastic Meteor Shower also is on the bill for the concert, which is part of Modesto’s Third Thursday Art Walk. Doors open at 5 p.m., and cover is $3 before 8 p.m., $5 after. Here’s video of French Cassettes performing in 2008 at Valley Brew. (Post continues below the video).
Looking for artists who are just as passionate but a little less loud? Check out the Pierced Ear Poetry Series’ Holiday Slam, which begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Plea for Peace Center in Stockton. The event is run by With Our Words, an organization which has spent the past several years putting Stockton’s spoken-word scene on the map. WOW slams are a great place to check out both emerging and experienced local poetry talent. Click here for more information about the Holiday slam.
Rock fans have a few good options on Friday, including Smile Empty Soul’s show at Fat Cat. The band’s plays a straight-forward and accessible brand of rock and is signed to EMI subsidiary F.O.F. records. The show starts at 7 p.m.; click here for more information.
Stockton screamo fans, meanwhile, will probably want to head back to the Plea for Peace Center on Friday to wish local band La Circa good luck as it kicks off a national tour. Over the past few years the Stockton act has built a dedicated following that has packed the pit at shows and earned it a deal with Negative Progression records. The Subtle Way, We Set Fire and others also are on the bill; click here for more information. Here’s video of the band performing at Rasputin in Stockton in 2008. (Post continues below the video).
Saturday’s entertainment calendar leads off with a show at Matinee in Stockton featuring, among others, Sirly. It’s been awhile since I’ve heard anything from the band and I thought they had broken up; I was happily surprised to learn I was wrong. Last I checked, Sirly was most likely Stockton’s lone indie reggae act. It has a dreamy, hypnotic sound that should help create an intoxicating atmosphere in Matinee’s back room. Also on the bill is Better Days and Planet Perhaps.
The show is part of a Matinee benefit for the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless. The bar is collecting donations for the shelter through Dec. 23, and in particular is seeking jackets, blankets, diapers size 3, 4, and 5 and disposable utensils like plates, forks and cups. Bring an item to donate and you’ll get free admission to concerts Friday and Saturday (Friday’s show features the Great Oglee Moglee Blues Band); any cover charge collected also will be donated to the shelter.
On Saturday the bar also will be raffling off an Oakland A’s jacket signed by pitcher and Stockton native Dallas Braden, who, along with mixed-martial arts fighter Nick Diaz, is supporting Matinee’s efforts on behalf of the shelter.
