A new jazz venue, Da Candy Shop, Lozano’s and connecting the dots in Stockton nightlife

As one downtown Stockton cafe closes another is preparing to open – and it’s expected to offer live music. The window decorations in the storefront at Sutter and Market streets (right) are advertising live jazz and blues daily.

Record Staff Writer Zachary Johnson recently spoke to the owner, who said the establishment will offer salads, grilled meats and evening jazz.

Followers of the local entertainment scene may recognize the address as the former location of Da Candy Shop, an all-ages urban dance club which closed in 2008 after city officials determined it was unsafe. The club drew some well-known rap acts whose performances were videotaped and posted on YouTube; you can find them here. I posted a highlight video from the club below.

Before Da Candy Shop the storefront was the home of Sutter Street Cafe, a lunch spot by day and blues club at night. It featured performances by some talented musicians, including Ron Thompson, and had a good reputation among local blues fans.

In 2005, however, Sutter Street Cafe closed after a dispute between owner Ron Lozano and his landlord, the Masonic Temple Association of Stockton Inc.

A few months ago Lozano got back into local entertainment by opening Lozano’s Pacific Avenue Grill at 6124 Pacific Ave., the site of the former End Zone sports bar. (It’s an easy location to miss; Stockton bar-goers may better know it as being on the north side of the same plaza as Touche Euro Lounge, the former Brandenburg’s.)

Lozano’s hosts an impressive array of blues musicians, like Sutter Street Cafe before it. The bar’s lineup this month has included Mick Martin and Mark Hummel; on Friday and Saturday it will host Shane Dwight.

For local blues fans, it’s a nightspot worth checking out.
