Youth and amateur sports bring true value to our community

For decades, Stockton has been host to tens of thousands of youth, amateur, collegiate, and professional athletes who have come to Stockton for various sports events, tournaments, and championships. These athletes have come from all over the country, and even the world, to compete right here in our city! Bringing these types of sporting events to Stockton is important to our economy and our way of life; they fill hotels, restaurants, and shopping areas and utilize our quality fields, stadiums, and arenas.

Just last year, Visit Stockton worked with dozens of sporting groups and rights holders, bringing tens of thousands of athletes to Stockton in excess of 7,000 hotel room nights and an overall economic impact of nearly $3.4 million. Some of the signature events of 2013 were the West Coast Conference Baseball Championships, the MPSF Water Polo Championships, the California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball and Softball Championships, and the ASA Fast Pitch Girls’ B 14-Under Western Regionals. You can view a complete recap of the efforts of Visit Stockton in our digital 2013 Annual Activities Report.

Recruiting these sporting events to Stockton is extremely competitive, with countless cities across the country vying for the same groups. In order to bring a variety of new and returning events to Stockton, the team at Visit Stockton reviews hundreds of potential events annually and submits dozens of official bids each year. In 2013 alone, Visit Stockton, in partnership with the University of the Pacific Athletics and SMG, submitted 56 proposals to the NCAA in an effort to host future championship events in Stockton. Ultimately, Stockton was awarded two events, one each for the 2016 Division II Women’s Golf Regionals and the 2017 Division II Men’s Golf Regionals. Stockton is consistently looking for new and unique sports to bring the city. We will talk in more detail about events that are coming to Stockton in 2014 in future blogs.

If you have an idea for an event in Stockton or work with a sports organization looking to host a championship event, please feel free to let us know!
